Steam Deck 2 Not Coming Anytime Soon: Valve Focuses on Polishing Current Model

No Steam Deck 2 in the coming years - Valve "apologizes."

With the introduction of the new OLED Steam Deck, one question arose among fans of the gaming handheld: Why hasn't Valve given the Steam Deck a new processor, and why are there only so few improvements?

Valve reveals schedule for Steam Deck 2.

Valve has now commented on this in detail following the presentation of the Steam Deck OLED. First of all, the company also gave a time frame for further plans, and it is very sobering: You shouldn't expect a Steam Deck 2 in the next two to three years.

In an interview (via Gizmodo), Lawrence Yang, UX designer at Valve, confirmed that the company is already actively working on a Steam Deck 2.

However, he explained that it takes a "cross-generational increase in performance" to justify the name Steam Deck 2, and Valve just doesn't see that as feasible at the moment.

Yang also pointed out limitations due to the availability of processors. Valve also doesn't want to release "annual" improvements like we see with smartphones, so as not to confuse developers by releasing lots of incremental updates. This is intended to guarantee consistent quality.

Yazan Aldehayyat, hardware engineer at Valve, added that the team is still learning from the original deck's design - but he's now hinting at major changes.

Design changes are coming.

While the OLED model uses the same form factor, a future Steam Deck could see important changes in design based on user feedback. Both engineers assume that the necessary increase in performance of the chip will take another two to three years. This coincides with the usual generational change in other gaming hardware such as the Xbox or PlayStation.

The OLED version that has just been introduced brings initial improvements thanks to an HDR OLED display, improved battery life, Wi-Fi 6E, and a slightly lower weight.

Is there going to be a Steam Deck 2?

Valve stated that they want to bring a great upgrade over the previous version, and they don't think that current processors available in the market are good enough. So, all fans have to wait two years, and they will be releasing a better version as all you want.

Will Steam Deck 2 be more expensive?

The latest Steam Deck OLED costs $549 for the 512 GB version. There are only slight changes in the Steam Deck OLED compared to the original version. So, we can expect that the Steam Deck 2 will be expensive if they are bringing significant changes to the hardware.

When would Steam Deck 2 come out?

As already mentioned, you have to wait at least two to three years for the Steam Deck 2 to be available in the market.
