Use It or Lose It: Google to Sweep Out Inactive Accounts

Google will delete millions of inactive Gmail accounts in December. This is what you should do to avoid being part of the great digital "purge."

Google inactive account policy 2023

Google will begin deleting inactive Gmail accounts on December 1. The technology giant had announced the decision in May, but now we know that the first "victims" will be the accounts that were never used.

It had previously been reported that accounts with two years of inactivity would be the first to be deleted, but now, with the policy update, the first phase will only affect users who created an email but never used it.

The justification behind this decision is to "reinforce the security" of the platform. Since, according to the technology giant, unused accounts are the most susceptible to being compromised.

It's important to note that Google has no plans to remove YouTube accounts with uploaded videos. Additionally, these changes to Google's inactive account policy only apply to personal accounts. So, if you have a business or education email, they will not be affected.

How do I rescue my old Google account?

If you are one of the users who wants to keep your old account created during your student days, all you have to do to activate it is to log in and perform one of these actions:

• Watch a video on YouTube

• Use Google Drive

• Download an app

• Send an email

• Use the search

• Access a third-party service with this account

If you don't know if your account qualifies as "inactive," don't worry, as Google will send email notifications to take action before starting to delete accounts. So, if you have an old account, you have time to save it.

Will Google delete inactive Gmail accounts?

Yes. Google will start deleting all inactive gmail accounts from December 1, if they haven't been used for two years.

Why is Google deleting inactive accounts?

Google is deleting inactive Gmail accounts for two main reasons:

1. Security: Unused accounts are more likely to be compromised, as they may not have strong passwords or two-factor authentication enabled.

2. Resource management: Like active accounts, inactive accounts also utilize storage and power. So, by deleting inactive accounts, Google can utilize these resources for active users.

What is the new Google Account policy 2023?

Starting in December, Google will be saying goodbye to inactive Gmail accounts. If you have Gmail accounts that are two years old and you haven't used them since their creation, they will be deleted soon. If you don't want to lose them, try logging in and sending some emails, so they will no longer be inactive.
